The Lebanese Passport After the Crisis: How I Rebuild My Travel Options From Sydney

The Passport That Changed in My Hands

I left Lebanon in 2016 with a Lebanese passport that accessed approximately 70 countries visa-free. By 2020, in the wake of the economic crisis that collapsed the Lebanese currency and banking system, the Lebanese passport had slipped to one of the most restricted travel documents in the world — not because the document itself had changed, but because the global perception of Lebanon as a travel origin had changed catastrophically.

I am a Lebanese-Australian architect based in Sydney. I held my Lebanese passport as my primary travel document until 2022, when I obtained Australian citizenship and a second passport. The experience of navigating the world with a severely restricted passport — and then the experience of navigating the world with one of the strongest passports — gave me a perspective on travel privilege that I think every traveler should understand.

The Practical Guide for Lebanese Passport Holders in 2025

The Lebanese passport currently accesses approximately 45 countries visa-free or visa on arrival. The most relevant accessible destinations:

  • Turkey: Visa-on-arrival, consistently available, important transit and destination hub
  • Arab League countries: Most Arab League countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Lebanese passport holders
  • Cyprus: Lebanon's closest European neighbor offers straightforward visa access and cultural familiarity
  • Several Southeast Asian countries: Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand offer varying levels of access

For restricted destinations (Schengen, UK, US, Canada), Lebanese passport holders face additional scrutiny related to Lebanon's current financial and political situation. The documentation requirements are more extensive and the proof of economic stability and ties to home country more demanding than for nationals of more stable countries.

The Dual Citizenship Strategy

For Lebanese diaspora with access to citizenship of another country — particularly those with European heritage, Australian-Lebanese, or Canadian-Lebanese backgrounds — obtaining a second passport is the most significant travel strategy available. The Lebanese Constitution permits dual nationality. The countries most relevant for Lebanese diaspora citizenship claims include Brazil (large Lebanese-Brazilian community, citizenship through ancestry possible), Argentina, and various EU member states for those with documented European heritage.

Building Visa History With a Restricted Passport

The principles are similar to other restricted passports: build a portfolio of travel stamps starting with the most accessible strong-visa destinations (UAE, Turkey, some Asian countries), maintain impeccable documentation of financial stability, and use each successfully stamped passport entry as leverage for subsequent applications. Lebanese community organizations in major diaspora cities (Paris, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Montréal) often have networks of immigration lawyers who specialize in Lebanese passport challenges and are worth consulting before complex applications.
