Pakistani Passport Visa Reality: Planning International Travel When 90% of the World Requires Pre-Approval

The Constraints Are Real. They Are Also Navigable.
The Pakistani passport currently sits at approximately 103rd place on the Henley Passport Index, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 33 countries. This is one of the most restricted mobility profiles in the world. I want to be honest about this and I also want to be equally honest about what it does not mean: it does not mean that Pakistani passport holders cannot travel internationally. It means that international travel requires more planning, more documentation, and more lead time than it does for passport holders from the Global North.
I am a travel planner based in Lahore. I specialize in helping Pakistani travelers navigate the visa system efficiently. Here is what I know.
The Most Accessible High-Value Destinations for Pakistani Travelers
- Turkey: Visa-on-arrival or e-visa for Pakistani passport holders. Istanbul is one of the world's great cities and a genuinely accessible destination. Application straightforward, typically 3-4 days processing.
- Azerbaijan: E-visa system, typically approved within 3 business days, relatively affordable ($20-25 fee). Baku is increasingly sophisticated and well-connected.
- Iran: Visa-on-arrival for Pakistani passport holders at Imam Khomeini Airport, Tehran. Iran's cultural and historical depth is extraordinary and access is more straightforward than many Pakistani travelers realize.
- Malaysia: Visa-on-arrival for Pakistani passport holders under certain conditions (employment-based criteria). Check current requirements as policies evolve.
- Maldives: Visa-on-arrival for all nationalities including Pakistan. 30-day free visa. One of the world's most beautiful destination directly accessible.
- Several African nations: Rwanda (visa on arrival, efficient system), Kenya (e-visa), Ethiopia (e-visa) — East Africa is increasingly accessible and well-organized for visa purposes.
Building Visa History Strategically
The most important strategic insight for Pakistani travelers seeking access to restricted destinations: visa history is cumulative capital. A Pakistani passport holder with a clean UK, Schengen, or US visa stamp has a significantly higher approval rate for subsequent applications to other restricted countries than an applicant without this history.
The recommended strategic sequence:
- Apply for and obtain a UK Standard Visitor Visa (the UK process, while expensive at approximately £115, is known for relatively transparent and merit-based decisions)
- Use the UK visa to travel and establish a clean travel history
- Use UK visa history to apply for Schengen visas — French and German consulates respond positively to UK visa history
- Build a portfolio of travel stamps across multiple Schengen countries over time
- Apply for US B1/B2 visa with combined UK and Schengen history — approval rate improves meaningfully
The Documentation System That Works
Every visa application for a Pakistani passport holder should include: property ownership documents (if applicable), family and dependent documentation (demonstrates strong ties to home country), business ownership or senior employment documentation, sufficient bank balance (3-6 months of statements), invitation letters if visiting family or friends abroad, and a clean police record. Completeness of documentation is the variable most within an applicant's control.
